Incline boys soccer | Vikings shut out Highlanders to start league
The Incline High boys soccer team dropped its home and league opener, 3-0, to first-year Northern 3A member South Tahoe this past Thursday, Sept. 2.
South Tahoe senior Kory DiGrande opened the scoring in the 30th minute on a feed from Eddie Hernandez. Five minutes into the second half, Hernandez made it 2-0, scoring off a cross from Luca Genasci. Derek Caro scored the Vikings' final goal, knocking a corner kick off the back of a defender and into the goal.
The defending 3A champion Highlanders are now 0-1 in the Northern 3A Sierra League and 1-2-1 overall. The Vikings also defeated Incline 3-1 in the season-opening Howell Memorial Tournament at Galena.

Incline girls soccer | Highlanders fall to Vikings in league opener
The Incline Highlander girls soccer team hosted first-year Northern 3A member South Tahoe this past Thursday in both teams league openers - and the game did not disappoint.
This is the first year that the 4A powerhouse Vikings were moved to the realigned Northern 3A Sierra League. For the Highlanders, it was to be a building year after losing four All-State seniors from last year's squad, leaving a team heavy with freshmen and sophomores.
The game showed that this year's Highlanders are anything but building for the future, and that they will hold their own against any 3A team.
The Vikings were on the board first at the 5-minute mark with a shot by senior Ali Palacios from the left side of center that caught the Highlander defense stacked too far right.
"The girls were nervous at the start of the game," said Incline head coach John Paganelli. "After all, we had never played them before and knew they were a very good team with speed up top."

Guest column: keeping Tahoe blue ... while businesses add green
"Property Rights" is one of the pillars of a capitalist society. One can argue that it is not only a right, but also one's duty to defend its ownership for the sake of preserving the system. And then, once in a while, one comes across an instance where someone takes "property rights" to an extreme and makes it self-defeating.
The news that League to Save Lake Tahoe is battling local small businesses to prevent them from using the unmistakable logo/message of "Keep Tahoe Blue" is one such instance.
As a career marketer, and someone who now teaches marketing, I know brands need to be defended zealously. In my very first job at Toyota, I recall receiving an 85-page guide focused only on color, font and positioning of text that was permitted under the corporate standards. It is not unusual for companies to spend millions every year building and defending their brands and everything associated with it.
But sometimes, bending the rules a little ca

Jim Clark: Can we afford 6 more years of Harry Reid?
In the last edition of the Bonanza, liberal political commentator Ed Gurowitz inked a column headlined "Nevada cannot afford Sharron Angle." To illustrate his point he cited accomplishments by incumbent Sen. Harry Reid and implied that if elected, Angle would be a very junior senator with no juice to "pork up" bills for Nevada.
Maintaining that "Reid has done a lot for Nevada" Ed wrote: "pick your issue - jobs (22,000 jobs at City Center in Las Vegas), Yucca Mountain, veterans' issues, energy policy ..." Hmmm, let's take a closer look.
In June 2008, the Las Vegas Review Journal published a story about construction of the $8 billion Las Vegas CityCenter, a joint venture of the MGM Mirage and Dubai World, consisting of a 61 story, 4,000-room hotel/casino, half a million square feet of commercial and 2,650 luxury residences priced from $500,000 to $21 million. The project employed 4,500 construction workers.

Ed Gurowitz: Labor Day brings reminders of current state of economy
In addition to the usual melancholy associated with the "official end of summer," this year's Labor Day observance brings with it, for me at least, a particularly poignant reminder of the current state of the economy in the US in general and in Nevada in particular.
Labor unions, once a major positive force advocating for the working class, have fallen into disrepute. Some of this is their own fault, with too many instances of corruption and greed on the part of unscrupulous union leaders, and too many instances of "protecting" their members against job insecurity by ignoring intelligent practices of workers' being accountable for producing an honest day's work for an honest day's pay. In too many instances unions have failed to advocate for all workers, regardless of race or gender, and this has contributed to their loss of the standing they had a century or so ago.
But it's not all the unions' fault. Management and busines

State: Research shows $31-for-$1 return on tourism ads
RENO, Nev. - Nevada tourism officials believe that every dollar they invested on an advertising campaign that ran during the last 12 months generated $31 in tax revenue in the state.
Dann Lewis, executive director of the Nevada Commission on Tourism, says the return on investment appears to be the second-highest among states that have shared their results.
Here's how the commission tracks results:
It contracts with TNS Global, a London-based market research company, and provides TNS with data about the markets that were targeted by the Nevada advertising campaign.
During the fiscal year that ended on June 30, Nevada's targets included Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Dallas, Seattle, Chicago, Sacramento and Salt Lake City as well as the Reno and Las Vegas markets.
Those markets account for about 15 million households. TNS screened them to come up with an estimate that 10.6 million of those households had traveled recently.
Then TNS asks a survey sample wheth
